Our Government has funded almost $1.6 billion in programs and services to support and assist Victoria’s Aboriginal community, including over $400 million in this Budget.
This includes work to support self-determination and further the treaty process between First Nations’ Peoples and the State.
We’re continuing to support our nation-leading treaty process with an investment of $151 million.
Other initiatives include:
- $36 million to deliver assessments for the protection of cultural significant Aboriginal Victorian sites
- $7.2 million to continue the Aboriginal Children and Families Innovation and Learning Fund, which provides grants to Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to undertake research that will allow them to better do their work
- $5.8 million to continue joint land management of the Barmah National Park in partnership with the Yorta Yorta people
- $5.8 million to deliver educational programs in schools that support learning and understanding of self-determination for Victorian Aboriginal communities
- $3.9 million to support returning water to Traditional Owners for cultural, spiritual and economic use
- $2.8 million to support the delivery of a Certificate IV in Teaching a First Nation’s Language, to help increase the number of Aboriginal language teachers in Victorian classrooms
- $2.2 million to support the Lake Tyers and Framlingham Aboriginal Trusts to strengthen their independence and support emerging leaders
- $947,000 to deliver Aboriginal community events that foster continue greater public awareness of Victorian Aboriginal culture and history
- $748,000 to deliver the Traditional Owner Settlement Act Forum that supports Aboriginal communities to negotiate traditional owner land rights that help communities realise the full benefit of their native title settlements.
